Troubleshooting garbage disposers

MANUFACTURERS CLAIM that a garbage disposer has a life expectancy of five to ten years, and that once one fails it is more economical to buy a new unit than repair the old one. This is sound advice if the motor burns out or if the unit begins leaking. However, if other failures occur during the life of a garbage disposer it is often possible to repair them and restore the appliance to service. The following troubeshooting charts tell you how to do this.
Caution: Never work on a garbage disposer while it is running. Always disconnect the fuse or trip the circuit breaker on line.' if the garbage unit is not plugged into a wall outlet that you can get to. If the latter situation prevails, pull, the cord from the wall plug. This safety step assures that someone won't accidentally turn on the disposer while you are working on it.
Offensive odors
Fill the disposer with ice cubes and run it for 15-30 seconds while keeping the unit shut off unless there is a cold-water switch. Follow with a good flushing of the unit with cold water—then give it a minute. Now, put two lemon halves down the tube and run the unit for 30-60 seconds with the water off, if possible. Follow with a water flush for another 30 seconds. With the disposer turned off, fill the sink with cold water. Turn the disposer on, force-flushing the water through the disposer.
Disposer leaks
1. Worn bearings
1. Disposer requires a complete over and seals haul. It will probably be more economical to buy a new unit.
