Word or two about electrically operated ovens

THE CONTROLS for the oven of an electric range vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model. Some ovens posses" only a thermostat, while others have in addition to a thermostat a selector switch and automatic timing clock.
A selection switch is included where an oven performs more than one function, such as broiling and baking, or if the range has more than one oven. Automatic timing clocks are connected to switches and can be tested for failure according to instructions.
As for oven thermostats those generally used to regulate temperature in electric-range ovens are fluid-filled sensing bulbs similar to the bulbs on the ends of climatic thermometers. As the oven temperature increases, the fluid expands and activates a bellows that forces the contacts apart. This shuts off the current to the oven elements. As the temperature inside the oven creases, the fluid contracts and contacts come together once again.
You can determine if the oven thermostat is calibrated accurately by placing a mercury thermometer in the oven and setting the thermostat for 400° F. Allow the oven to heat up, permitting the thermostat to cycle at least four times before checking temperature. Many modern electric ranges have ,,self cleaning ovens. If the thermometer reads within 15° of 400°, the thermostat is properly calibrated. If not, recalibration is necessary. Calibration instructions are normally stamped on the oven thermostat it-self or are provided in the manual that accompanied the range. Determining whether a self-cleaning oven is operating properly is a matter of observation following the cleaning process. If deposits that re-main are brown and soft, cleaning did not take place. If deposits are dark brown, cleaning is incomplete. If a loose gray ash remains, cleaning has been completed.
If your oven is too hot (cold ) and you want to adjust the setting.
The temperature adjustment of your oven is sometimes located behind the thermostat knob. Take off the thermostat knob and look for a small screw with a plus and minus sign, or notches. Take a screwdriver and carefully adjust the screw up or down.
Be careful. This is also a favorite place for the manufacturers to locate the LP or natural gas switch. If you see the initials LP and N, do not touch the set screw. Accidentally switching from natural gas to LP gas operation could cause an explosion that would destroy your house and everyone in it.
